Ten Essentials
What They Are
The "Scout Basic Essentials", also known as the "Boy Scout Ten Essentials" are as follows:
- Pocketknife
- Rain gear - for example, a poncho
- Trail food
- Flashlight - headlamp or other
- Extra clothing - extra insulation in case it gets colder
- First-aid kit
- Sun protection - sun glasses and sunscreen
- Map and compass
- Matches and fire starters
- Water bottle
These items are recommended to be carried on all outdoor adventurers, for example, day hikes.
Some Additional Items
The following items are also a good idea on outdoor adventures:
- Mosquito repellant - at least 30% DEET to repel ticks as well
- Emergency shelter - quick shelter or polyester film blanket (e.g., MylarTM)
- Emergency signals - mirror and whistle
How to Bring These
Some of the items can comfortably be mounted on your belt or carried in your
pockets. Pack the rest in a day pack (not a big backpack).
